Tuesday November 20, 7pm, Palm to Palm: The Art of Holding Hands, gallerywest, 1172 Queen Street West, pay what you can

On the 1st of January 2012, Glasgow-based live artist Louise Brodie set out to hold hands with another person every single day for 30 consecutive minutes. Palm to Palm is a reflection on the people she has met and the situations she has found herself in. Join her for the evening as she attempts to guide you through a dangerous journey exploring her discoveries of Britain’s touch-deprived culture. Presented by Mammalian Diving Reflex and gallerywest.

Thursday November 22, 8pm-midnight, The Speakeasy Ball, Cinecycle (coach house behind 129 Spadina Ave.) $25, dress up like a flapper!

Presented by the archival organization Dance Collection Danse, it’s a one-night-only evening of music, drink, food and dancing. Stroll down an alleyway, whisper the password and wander into a recreation of a 1920s speakeasy. Live performances and prize giveaways, plus the debut of DCD’s website and podcast for young professionals. Plus a self-promotion table for zines, event flyers, art for display and more. Saturday November 24, 1:30pm, Impossible Words featuring Cherie Dimaline and Moez Surani, The Academy of the Impossible, 231 Wallace Avenue

The final Impossible Words event of 2012 features local writers Cherie Dimaline and Moez Surani. They will be joined by Caleb Trudeau and Huda Tariq from the Toronto Street Writers. Impossible Words is a Saturday afternoon literary salon featuring readings by and conversations with culturally and stylistically diverse Canadian authors. This is one of our favorite literary events happening in Toronto right now – do yourself a favor and check out this inspiring and wonderful afternoon of tips, insights and great work by established and aspiring writers.

Shop Cats Presents: The 3rd Annual Wandering Winter Craft Show. The Wandering Winter Craft Show returns for a third year; wandering the city over three weekends during the holiday season staging pop-up craft events featuring local handicrafts and artists. This year’s event features four show dates at three locations on Queen Street West: The Magic Pony, The Cameron House and the historic Gladstone Hotel. With over 30 local artists showcasing their one of kind goods, including jewelry, fashion, prints, and unique artworks, there’s sure to be something for everyone on your holiday shopping list. It’s the 7th birthday of the Toronto Poetry Slam! Along with our usual spoken word competition, we also have guest poet Missie Peters gracing our stage. She is a spoken word artist and improviser from Victoria BC. She is a two-time Victoria Slam Champion, a former Slam Master and the current Artistic Director of the Victoria Spoken Word Festival. Plus an open mic. Yeah, c’mon!

This month’s Lilah Kemp features stories from boxed-in communities on the outskirts of cities. Nosy neighbours, bored teenagers, and overprotective parents. Featuring readings from Chris Benjamin, Shashi Bhat, Andie Bulman, Rachel Caroline Derrah and Geordie Miller. Music from Nick Dourado and live theatre from Kristin Slaney.

MONCTON

Tuesday November 20, 6:30pm, Mini Maker-Faire, Moncton Public Library, 644 Main Street, Suite 101, all ages

TEENS! Drop in to play at one project table, or stay and try them all! Projects include a bristle bot, LED throwies, fishtail bracelets and much more! Bring your own project to show off or come learn to build a simple robot or other robotic, electronic DIY experiments. Experts from HubCityLabs will be on hand to answer questions, and demo their skills.
