Tuesday January 29, 6-8pm, Q & A with Kat Kruger, Type Books, 883 Queen Street West

Join the good folks at Type for a reading and Q & A with Kat Kruger, author of the YA novel The Night Has Teeth, out on Fierce Ink Press, which we profiled in issue 57 of BP.

Thursday January 31, 8pm, The Annual All-Female Poetry Slam, The Boat, 158 Augusta Avenue, $10

It’s the Toronto Poetry Project’s annual all-female slam, the winner of which will participate in the Women of the World Poetry Slam Tournament in Minneapolis in March. Featuring singer/songwriter Mary Lambert.

Friday February 1, 7pm. Reggae or Not: The Birth of Dancehall Culture in Jamaica and Toronto, Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St. West

This is the presentation of photographer Beth Lesser’s first art exhibition – she traveled between Jamaica and Toronto in the 70s and 80s and in the process captured a variety of photos documenting reggae scenes in both cities for her own publication, Reggae Quarterly. Featuring DJ Everett Cooper.

Saturday February 2, 5pm-11pm, Toronto Roller Derby: ToRD vs. Killamazoo Double Header, The Bunker 40 Carl Hall Road, Studio 3, $14

A double-header to kick off 2013. First up ToRD’s B-team the Bay Street Bruisers will be taking on the B – Team from Kalamazoo. Followed by our All Stars CN Power taking on the All Stars from Kalamazoo, Michigan the Killamazoo Derby Darlings.

The stunning hilarious Fan Fiction series continues with a “shaken, not stirred” theme. Hilarious comedians and other funny folks reading the best and the worst James Bond-themed fanfic the internet has to offer. Unmissable!

Thursday January 31, 8pm, Crowd Karaoke, MainLine Theatre, 3997 Boul. Saint-Laurent, $6

Have you always wanted to do karaoke but feel intimidated at the prospect of performing on your own? Crowd Karaoke aims to fix that, providing a group of like-minded singers to join you in your favorite karaoke tunes. Choose a song to add to the playlist and let your voice join the swelling chorus of the group while lyrics are projected right in front of you.

It’s a good ol-fashioned knitting circle with tea and snacks! Crochet, embroidery and other crafts are also welcome. After the crafting, there will be a screening of Home, a documentary about the diversity of life on earth. Free!
