CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Canzine and Canzine Symposium 2013!

Ever fantasize about holding your own workshop? Hungry for the short-lived glory of leading a panel at an indie culture festival? BROKEN PENCIL: the magazine of Zine Culture and the Independent Arts is now accepting proposals for the Canzine Festival of Zines and Underground Culture (Toronto and Vancouver) and the Canzine Symposium (Toronto only).

(Note: Canzine Registration for Toronto will begin on August 1, 2013.)

Canzine Symposium for Indie Culture Makers 

Saturday October 19, 2013 * 918 Bathurst Centre Toronto

Call for proposals: We are now accepting proposals for panel discussions and individual workshops.  Proposals should include a brief 2-3 paragraph description of the proposed workshop or panel including topic to be covered and planned speakers and activity. Panels and workshops should be focussed on skills development for independent creators working in the mediums of self publishing and zine/comic/book/web arts.  All panel and workshop participants will receive an honorarium.

Held the day before the main Canzine festival, the Symposium is our one day conference and skillshare for Toronto’s indie art community. Last year’s panels included Fundraising strategies, Design Techniques to Primp your Indie Publication, and more.

Canzine Festival of Zines and Underground Culture 

Sunday, October 20, 2013, 918 Bathurst Centre, Toronto

Call for proposals: We are now accepting proposals for “art rooms” at Canzine. The arts rooms at Canzine provide a day long immersive experience to the 800-1000 attendees at the Canzine festival. They range from multimedia to fully  participatory. The intention of the art room is to stimulate, provoke and advance the discussion around the possibilities of independent arts and culture creativity. Past art rooms have included all day jam sessions, DIY board games, mini-film festivals and an all day crocheting lessons drop-in.  Proposals should include a brief 2-3 paragraph description of the proposed art room and schedule of activities.

Note: Art room occupants pay a fee and the art room creators are able to sell art works, zines, comics, books, t-shirts etc. as well as disperse information to promote their future activities.

 

Canzine is Canada’s largest annual zine and indie culture festival. It features over 200 zine and self publishing exhbitors, and has an audience of 800-1000 people visiting throughout the day.

Canzine West:  Vancouver Festival of Zines and Underground Culture mid November, exact date and location to be announced shortly

Call for proposals: We are now accepting proposals for panel discussions and workshops to be held at Canzine West. These discussions and workshops are attended by Canzine participants. They are meant to enhance Canzine West programming by offering Canzine attendees opportunities to discuss and explore different aspects of independent arts and culture. Past presentations have included a panel discussion of repression of dissent in art, an exploration of the rise of punk culture in Canada and its effect on zine culture and more. Proposals should include a brief 2-3 paragraph description of the proposed workshop or panel including topics to be covered and planned speakers and activity. All panel and workshop participants will receive an honorarium.

 

Held annually in Vancouver, Canzine West is Western Canada’s largest zine fair and festival of underground culture.  It features over 100 zine and self publishing exhibitors and an audience  of 400-500 people.
