Canzine isn’t just a place to discover new zines and comics. Couples have met at the yearly zine fair and future collaborators have connected through Canzine.
In May we received this letter (which will also run in the fall issue of Broken Pencil) from Five Seventeen, creator of the zine Tape-Gun:
Hi!I’m writing with what may be an unusual request. I’m looking for 2002’s Canzine poster.
Why?
Because I met the woman I’d later marry (and have been married to for over 5 years) at a Canzine table. She is the author of the ongoing Sun Shines on it Twice and I used to create Tape-Gun (I now design books for a living, so zine-making hasn’t happened for awhile).
We still keep a Broken Pencil Subscription and man a table at Canzine (It’s been Canzine West the last few years, but we’re back in Toronto)
Anyway, for our next anniversary, I’d love to find an old poster/screen print/whatever to frame in our home.
Any ideas or leads?
Thanks,
Five
Unfortunately we couldn’t find the poster but we sent along and older issue of the magazine that contained an ad for Canzine 2002.
Ten years later, you can meet Five Seventeen (and perhaps his wife Claire Heslop, if she can get the time off of work) at Canzine Toronto. They are both working on new issues of their zines. Five has also put together some reprints of his favourite issues to re-introduce Tape-Gun to new audiences. Stop by their table at Canzine to say hello and happy anniversary.
