Hey folks, intern-Paul here once again ready to bestow unto thee the hot happenings of the h-internet. But first, have you ever really considered just how weird the night sky is? Here, we have this window the universe, but it isn’t a cohesive picture. Those bright dots are mostly stars, and each of which are either tens, hundreds, or even thousands of light years away. It can take over a thousand years for the light from one dot to reach us. It might not even exist anymore! It might have exploded yesterday. But we won’t know it until its last bit of light reaches our humble home. Each dot is from a different time; the sky is a mosaic of the past—a broken time machine projecting only a fragmented image of objects in space.
None of this has anything to do with the today’s Friday Roundup, by the way. It’s just food for thought!
Today’s theme is all about sights and sounds. Every link is sure to keep your eyes and ears satisfied! And now, without further ado:
Time in Motion by Fong Qi Wei
Last year, the amazing photographic artist Fong Qi Wei released his series Time is a Dimension, composite photographs offering a static representation of space and time, with cutouts of the same scene stitched together to provide a single landscape under different moments of the day. His new series, Time in Motion, is more or less a revamp of TIAD. Now those same images are no longer static, but instead animated—and the effect is absolutely stunning!
Tokyo Tune Train
The concept of Tokyo Tune Train is more or less simple, but the overall effect is pretty dang satisfying. Search for a tune, and you literally “play” it by driving a “train” along a route, with each movement playing another bar from the song. Make a mistake, and you’ll land in another section of the song. With practice, you’re now remixing the song with your arrow keys! Plus, the music library is huge! One quick note though: I had trouble running the game through Firefox, so be aware that it might not be compatible with all browsers (Chrome worked perfectly fine!)
Theremin
A virtual theremin. What more would you want? Seriously, this is exactly what every eight year old ever wanted in life. At least, I sure did.
Happy Get Lucky by Pomplamoose
I don’t generally get the more popular varieties of music these days, though the one exception is when creative artists come up with a good mash-up. And I wouldn’t ever forgive myself if I left out this number performed by the fantastic band Pomplamoose, comprised of musicians Nataly Dawn and Jack Conte. Happy Get Lucky is a musical mash-up combining the lyrics from Daft Punk’s Get Lucky and Lose Yourself to Dance with the tune to Pharrell Williams’ Happy. The result is simply the best thing ever. If that weren’t enough, the video is an incredibly clever single-cut shot using visual effects from a projector on various foam cut-out sets. Just sit back and enjoy everything about it.
That’s all for now! Enjoy the sights, enjoy the sounds, enjoy the weirdness of the night sky, and I’ll see you all next week with more wonderful things!
