Indie Events: Sept 17 – 23

TORONTO

Thursday September 20, 7pm-9pm, Pope Hats #3 Launch Event, The Central (603 Markham Street) free

Come on out and celebrate two fascinating young comics authors. Featuring author Ethan Rilly and the debut of his new work Pope Hats, and special guest appearance by one-man-comics-industry Michael DeForge (Lose, Ant Colony). Rilly and DeForge will each read from recent work and grill each other about their odd cartooning habits. Presented by the Beguiling.

Sunday September 23, 7:30pm, This is Not a Reading Series presents Anton Piatigorsky’s The Iron Bridge, The Ballroom, Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen Street West)

Why did Mao Tse-Tung refuse an arranged marriage in his youth? What betrayal, humiliation, and denial shaped the adolescent years of Idi Amin, Rafael Trujillo, and Joseph Stalin? Join two-time Dora Award-winning playwright Anton Piatigorsky in conversation with Misha Glouberman (co-author of The Chairs are Where the People Go) as he explores these questions and more at the Toronto launch of his highly anticipated debut The Iron Bridge. This new book, published by Goose Lane Editions, playfully investigates the impact of a seemingly insignificant series of events and how they shaped some of the world’s most infamous tyrannical figures.

HALIFAX

Thursday September 20, 8pm, Pecha Kucha: Cultural Landscapes, Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, 1055 Marginal Road

During this Pecha Kucha event, participants will define culture as what members of a group do, think and feel and how it’s reflected in the world around us. Groups can be hipster culture, hunting/fishing culture, roller derby culture, kijiji culture, social media culture and more.
The idea behind PechaKucha is to have 14 people sharing their ideas, thoughts and works within the course of one night.

Friday September 21, 9pm, CKDU Fundraiser: A Celebration of Weird Al, Gus’ Pub and Grill (2605 Agricola Street) $7 ($5 if you dress like Weird Al)

This fundraiser for Dalhousie’s campus radio station CKDU is too great not to mention: it’s a tribute night to Weird Al Yankovic and his musical oeuvre. Local bands will perform covers of classic Weird Al songs, there’s Kar-AL-oke, where audience members can perform their own renditions of the hits, and polka classics and Weird Al mashups will be spun by DJ James Reid. Proceeds from burger purchases and the door will go to CKDU.
