Indie Events: September 24 – 30

This week marks the giant all-night art crawl Nuit Blanche in Toronto on September 29 – 30. There’s wayyyy too many great events that evening for us to list here, so keep your eye on the website to schedule your evening. We’ll be posting a blog about a Nuit Blanche event we’re really looking forward to – the 12-Hour Zine Machine Extravaganza – later this week.

 

TORONTO

Tuesday September 25, 7pm, Fall 2012 Bibliobash, Dora Keogh Irish Pub, 141 Danforth

Join indie publishers Biblioasis with a fall party featuring an all-star lineup of readers from the imprint. Featuring C.P. Boyko, Nadine McInnis, Alice Petersen, Norm Sibum, and a special appearance by David Helwig. Check the Biblioasis blog for interviews with the readers and more information about their work! Thursday September 27, 7:30pm, The Crush Project Presents: Recovering Albertans, 2nd floor gallery, Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen Street West, $10

It’s the official launch for talented transgender singer/songwriter Rae Spoon’s first novel, “First Spring Grass Fire,” out now on Arsenal Pulp Press. Featuring Vivek Shraya and a Q & A by host Kaleb Robertson.

Friday September 28, 7:30pm, Pushing Buttons, 2nd Floor Gallery, Canadian  Lesbian and Gay Archives, 34 Isabelle Street

Pushing Buttons re-imagines the space of The Pin Button Project, an online experience that engages individual memory and storytelling through the exhibition of a rich history of LGBTQ+ buttons from the holdings of the CLGA. In Pushing Buttons, the online is brought into the physical as space and content are reimagined into an enveloping experience that turns the spectator into witness and calls attention to the historical and present roles of various buttons, from social activism in the streets to social media activism on the web.  Admission is free.

Friday September 28, 8:30pm, Making Connections: Untapping Emerging Talent in Toronto’s Special Needs Community, Cinecycle, 129 Spadina Avenue, free

An evening of films that star actors with special needs. Includes Rainbow Connection, a film by the director of the upcoming punk rock documentary The Last Pogo Jumps Again, Kire Paputts. Free!

KINGSTON

Thursday, September 27, 7pm-10pm, Art After Dark, Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre, 21 Queen Street

Modern Fuel will once again be opening its doors, along with 14 other participating venues, for Art After Dark, Downtown Kingston’s bi-annual gallery crawl. Stop by Modern Fuel for its latest exhibition, and visit the fourteen other participating galleries and businesses. Check out the Facebook event for more info.

OTTAWA

Saturday September 29, 9pm, Ottawa Strip Spelling Bee, Raw Sugar Cafe, 692 Somerset W., $10

Yes, Ottawa, you get your own version of the Strip Spelling Bee! Lucky you.
The game is played a lot like strip poker, but it’s a spelling bee, and it’s played in front of a live audience of hooters, hollerers and hecklers. Sign-up is at 8:30pm and spellers get in for free (and get a free drink.)

MONTREAL

Friday September 28, 1pm, Community Bike Tour, meet at Norman Bethune Statue, corner of Guy and de Maisonneuve, in front of the Tim Horton’s

Presented by QPIRG Concordia. An interactive tour of the neighborhoods near Concordia, including Little Burgundy, Shaughnessy Village, St-Henri, Griffintown and Pointe Saint-Charles (and possibly Verdun!). Come learn more about popular, queer, and working class struggles in our communities, as well as current campaigns against gentrification, car culture and poverty. HALIFAX

Tuesday September 25, 7pm, September Comics Jam, Roberts Street Social Centre, 5684 Roberts Street, $2 suggested donation

It’s comic making time! Bring your pens and pencils, and create group comics  with a bunch of artists. Blank paper and art fuel in the form of tea, coffee, and baked goods will be provided. Artists of all skill levels are encouraged to work with each other to create amazing (and often bizarre) comic stories.

The wonderful Lilah Kemp Reading Series returns with readings from Josh Tibbetts, Cody Hawes, Matthew Tierney and Mathew Henderson. With music from PANOS and performance art by Brian Riley.
