A day late, a buck short. Still tons of great events going on!
HALIFAX
As a sort of microcosmic indie antidote to the ongoing discussions surrounding the Nova Centre, a controversial $164-million-dollar convention centre to be built in downtown Halifax, a cluster of clever and enterprising Halifax creators have assembled the World Portable Gallery Convention. Presentations, performances, panel discussions, and events will playfully punctuate the gathering of local and international “industry professionals” and open up dialogues on topics surrounding scale, autonomy, mobility, intimacy, as well as transitions from alternative to established, and the pathways between DIY and entrepreneur. AMAZING. For a complete schedule of events, visit the convention’s Facebook page.
Come to the launch of Jacking Off With God #4 (featuring comics, comedy, and candor) by Sorrel, and Femmes In Space (featuring intergalactic space femme celebrations, sort of.) co-edited by Kate Hazell and Shay Enxuga. There will be readings by Ellen Taylor, Jacqueline Vincent, Ezra Frey, and Ashley Alberg, as well as homos, humor, and maybe food.
TORONTO
It’s a Chat Perdu Productions double-header!
Um, obviously. Come watch clever exhibitionists try and spell impossibly difficult words while doffing their garments bit by bit. This is a popular and riotous event that must be experienced to be believed. The event is queer, straight, senior and trans-friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and extremely encouraging. Plus the hosts are really cute and hilarious.
With a lending library of designated dancers for all you wallflowers, and a dancecard-booklet to set up dances in advance (should you choose to), Queer Slowdance Night has all slow songs, all night long! (Except for the occasional intermission with fast songs.) It’s high school with a happy ending. Come and experience why slow is beautiful, and why love is not ironic.
The city’s best magazine for young girls is throwing a bash. Featuring the Toronto Street Writers, Scorpio Rising, and most thrillingly, bands from Girls Rock Camp Toronto: Questionable Methods, City Sailors and ADULT DI$COUNT. YES!
