I met Spyker and he gave me a whole wad of these self-produced pamphlets featuring his own idiosyncratic fiction. Many of them feature one Johnny Steam a frustrated bizzaro who needs more sex. Sample paragraph from Johnny Steam Plays the Fool: “Last year I couldn’t figure out which of my two minds to follow, but in the end I pinched my cigarette into the shape of a heart and jammed the lit end into his hand. It bled bright red for days. It scarred, but only faintly. He’s taken to using makeup to bring out its highlights.” Spyker highlights the anxious tension between narrator and character by basically refusing to make such mundane distinctions. Be prepared. One day Spyker will meet you in the street and stick a bunch of these pamphlets in your sweaty scarred out-reached palm. Be afraid.
