The subtitle of this magazine reads: “a cacophony of jubilantly barking dogs.” This seems to me to be somewhat of an exaggeration. Brink is much more like a slick east coast magazine trying to portray itself as an indie zine. What you do in fact get in Brink is pretty much the Halifax version of Toronto’s own Shift magazine. And like Shift, the writers at Brink are trying to tap into the current alt-culture zeitgeist (whatever that may be). In addition to this, of course, they’re going to try and sell you as much beer and music as you’re willing to buy. Which isn’t to say that Brink doesn’t have its moments. I mean, we do get articles such as “Sex With Seamen” and the great “Ben-Wa debate.” (DP)
