Crouched Head

Being a solitary sort as a kid (and, admittedly, as an adult), I had to come up with my own nicknames for myself. One of them was Softed, a daft combination of soft, head and Ted (a nickname given by real, flesh and blood friends). This name was designed to summarize my habit of absorbing the gestures and speaking patterns of people around me. It suggested my own lack of identity and helped me imagine myself as a pile of secondhand influences and experiences. Very post-modern for a teenager, don’t you think? I don’t know the etymology of Josh Zubot’s Crouched Head tag but his music is a mélange of sound sources and instrumental phrases that come together in just slightly abnormal combinations. Assembled rather than composed, his broken beat tracks evoke double exposed film and schizophrenic dance parties taking place in multiple time zones synchronously. (Terence Dick)
