Definitely some twisted contrasts going on here. There’s cuteness, alright, downright sickening cuteness. Makes you wonder which is more disgusting – the cute characters, or the fact that that cute little pink bunny has his leg caught in a trap and his friend is getting ready to saw it free. Makes you say ‘Awwwww!’ in any case. Éric Thériault’s cover is flawlessly drawn, with beautiful pastel colors adding to its cuddliness. Inside, this particular take on cuteness is rendered a variety of ways. Fidèle Castrée fits in perfectly here, as her cute characters are often involved in less-than-savoury pursuits anyway (this time, a lonely bulimic girl keeps storing her puke in a box until, a couple months later, she has a warm hairy friend to call her very own.) Bernie Mireault’s ‘Bug-Eyed Monster’ has action drawn so well reading it feels like watching a cartoon. Jag’s tale of seriously sinister cute little girls, Mimi and Stella, closes this very unique theme comic. As always it’s a pleasure to see some of Montreal’s nearly unequalled comics community work on something together. Especially when it’s so sickly cute. (LR)
