In Moncton, the North Atlantic Beer Brigade (NABB) has recently begun an 8 page newsletter zine called Depth Charge. Among other things, this invaluable zine reports on the mass arrest of anti-poverty protestors in Montreal who raided a buffet in a “posh Montreal hotel” and carried off “heaping platefuls of food” to those on the street outside. Even though the restaurant decided not to press charges, the police have gone ahead and charged the protestors; bail conditions for four organizers initially included “not appearing at demos before they are tried”, and “not communicating with each other.” In addition to this substantive report there are other, shorter politically tinged rants that run the gamut from the rebellious to the redundant to the incredibly arch (“One Individual’s Opposition To Sunday Shopping”). Though the writing could be a little more friendly and informal, this zine covers an amazing amount of stuff in 8 pages and obviously takes the power of the word seriously. (HN)
