Some people just don’t have any rock and roll in them. I went to high school with a girl who didn’t own a pair of pants, just skirts and dresses. That’s not rock. She was almost punk though in her absolute refusal to conform to the casual slacks dogma of the day. Julia Frodahl of the Edison Woods is similarly at odds with the world and equally non-rock. She likes her music with string sections, lightly brushed drums and smokey vocals. Just like my friend from high school, there’s a slight whiff of witchiness about her, but other than that, I’m down with the “arock” (as in “atypical” or “asexual”). (Terence Dick)
