I spent a good long time with this ‘zine, trying to determine if it was a parody. I mean, how likely is it that a magazine “for Homesteaders” “for Natural People and Mother Nature Lovers” would be published out of the Bronx? But I’m pretty sure it’s for real. Farming Uncle has that sort of insane non-sequitur intensity one finds in some outsider art, or in early 20th century American evangelical publications. It’s like the Church of the Subgenius moved to Montana and became a rural survivalist/Native American activist. There’s some good ol’ off-the-grid paranoia herein as well: warnings against biological warfare, and, though maybe it’s only funny in hindsight, pronouncements that Y2K will be the doom of us all. Singles ads, too. Right next to the Goat Management Tips. Lordy be. (MD)
