The introduction by Sevrd Hed Collective, “Putting the evil back in devilishly clever”, states they are not targeting any kind of market, and creativity comes first. Okay so let’s get down to brass tax. There’s a not so funny sign language rap star comic. Some hysterical drawings of a skull in a space suit with the caption “Don’t let being dead hold you back.” There’s a good little story called On the Topic of Maidens about cutting off a pink arcade game gun for a girl. I guess she wanted it. The Pain Is Here is about a guy with sore wrists who breakdances anyway. I liked this zine, even though I don’t like the idea of Guns, Drugs and Love being so closely and frequently associated in a demented triple-threat marriage. Guns are prevalent in this issue. So is liquor. But so are robots and zombies and cute girls. The anti-focus of the zine lets the contributors run amuck, fuelling its energy. My favourite piece comes near the back – Play The Game is an observational piece about a girl on a bus, she’s: “Too caught up in fun to give a damn and too young to be thrown out on the street. Her career choice at the moment was selling roses…Will she decide to go back under their wing again after all that she experiences? I’ll never know, just like everything really.” GD&L is a loot bag of oddness. (NGM)
