I was accidentally sent this comic because the editors thought I was a distributor. I couldn’t help them out with distribution but I can reach out and direct all us true northern folk to something happening in North Carolina. Seems as if Alternating Crimes is starting an empire, and we’re all invited to come along for the ride. Although printed on simple newsprint, the red cover and quality material inside make this a steal at $1. It seems to be the product of two gentlemen, Paul Friedrich and Daniel Gallant. Gallant draws chunky clean lines and Friedrich has a looser sketchy style. Their stories take up almost the entire issue except for a couple of one pagers from other contributors, including Aleksander Zograf. Friedrich’s story is my favourite. It’s the bizarre tale of Onion Head Monster who terrorizes the city, a surreal Godzilla myth told in absurd non-sequiturs. Here is a sample of fight scene dialogue: “Go kiss your Mother.” / “Kansas your Sweden.” / “Where’s the love?” / “Jump back Kerouac.” Editor Gallant provides a Nancy Drew-type strip about a couple of kid detectives. Chrissy checks out a clue while Danny devours PB & J. The back page is a hilarious spoof on a mail order drawing school, “Learn to draw in three seconds!” If you live in Raleigh you would probably pick this up in the laundry mat and revel in Onion Head’s destruction while absorbing the calming effects of the tumble dry. Since you probably don’t, send a measly buck. (AB)
