Journeywoman

How many women’s travel magazines does Canada need? One? Two? Three? Are there more I don’t know about? Well okay, welcome to Journeywoman, a travel quarterly that, for all its middle-class assumptions, does manage to have some fun articles and carry off its mandate — suburban feminism with a hint of the exotic — without a hitch. Okay, titles will be sufficient from here on in: Mom and I in Costa Rica, Italian Men – Her Report, The Older Adventuress. Seriously, though, if you are a woman looking for ideas and info about travel, this might, depending on your budget and your conception of safety, be just the thing. Journeywoman’s best feature is also its worst enemy. First person accounts of travel adventures can’t help coming out as both sincere and patronizing. Best line: “As the only woman, I had four instant big brothers – four gorgeous hunks to tease and joke with” from She Kayaks With the Whales. Check out the top ten travel books for women page, a listing of the ten best books/newsletters/info guides available on the topic of women traveling. Well, see ya on the beach in Costa Rica for some culturally correct dating.
