When McGill Street Magazine started up again after a year-long going to bring a little life and energy to what had previously been a fairly lackluster literary magazine. Unfortunately, many of the same problems that plagued their previous issues resurface in the resurrected magazine. There’s nothing wrong with their magazine. People might very well enjoy it. But it remains a fairly uninspiring publication that seems victimized by its own unstated sense of political correctness and the desire to be an important ‘player’ in the Toronto literary scene. In other words, in this first issue McGill Street does not take the risks necessary to make it a truly relevant lit mag in a country that has no shortage of lit mags. New writing is rarely as respectable as they want to be over there on McGill Street.
