Opuntia

My new year’s resolution was to be less obsessive about reading everything I come across and to limit my esoteric interests, so when I started flipping through these issues of Opuntia I got scared and only skimmed through them. One part of me pined to join in the erudite, meticulously researched and fastidiously arranged correspondences and essays on the topics of philately, letter writing, Star Trek and Science Fiction fandom. A couple years ago, I would have eaten up the stuff on “invisible postal history” (eg. public letter writers, round robins, chain letters, and rocket mail). The stuff I read was beautifully written. As demonstrated by the index issue (40.2), Dale is very serious about his work. Now one can easily locate the references in previous issues to propeller beanies, spirit duplicators and the history of pencils. The (dare I say it?) anality of this whole endeavour is overwhelming and intriguing. I wish I could engage with the community that circles this zine but I don’t have time. And that’s sad. (TD)
