Shit’s Fucked #2

Advice columns for the demonically possessed, serial killer profiles (with fun “Fucked Fact[s]” offering rarities), waterc-olour and ink ghoul girls. This episode of Shit’s Fucked brings you more of the off-kilter and off-centred to — following their own maxim — “Protect Us from the Spirits of Those Who Are Boring and Annoying.”

And protect us they do, through fervent storytelling, comics and even a foldout Ouija board that’ll provide some out-of-world chats when mere mortals cannot hold us from boredom (also stands “to contact the ghost of someone who owes you money,” if this is a need of yours). Shit’s Fucked is an ode to those that don’t find meaning in ordinary life. Spotlighting Edith Massey, Charles Starkweather, and Caril Ann Fugate (who, if you don’t know by name, you may recognize through Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska or Terrence Malick’s film, Badlands), the zine offers its pages up to communications from beyond your dad’s magazine rack — and beyond the corporeal world.

Particularly interesting is a piece on Tiny Tim detailing his family life, mar-riage, and performances, with the focus question: is Tiny Tim a joke? I threw on a 1960s performance of Tim singing “Tip Toe Through the Tulips” while reading the piece to remember the singer past his music’s demonic montage in the horror movie Insidious. Any piece of writing that has the ability to connect me to its artistic subject, such that I seek it out by the piece’s finish, is a success. Shit’s Fucked fuses fantasy with reality, guiding us out of this world in order to link us back to it.
