Misery loves company, as do writers. Hence, Slush, named for the ubiquitous slush piles where manuscripts get tossed. Of course, they couldn’t come right out and call this Slush Pile, since that name already belongs to another Toronto-based zine. But this Slush holds its own, covering all the pitfalls and tiger traps of the writing game, offering supportive tidbits about great writers who took a loooong time to ‘make it’, an interview with Tim Wynveen (Angel Falls) and tons of pitch recommendations. And, not to overlook the salt stains that come from slush piles, we also get ‘deconstructing the rejection letter’, suicide-as-a-career option, and mini reality checks about the romantic writing lives of Sylvia Plath, Margaret Lawrence and Fitzgerald. Good, clean fun for the hard-working, lonely genius in all of us. (HC)
