Sunburn

Sunburn is an impressive collection of the work of talented indie cartoon artists, without too much of the hipper-than-thou attitude that can permeate this kind of stuff. I really liked Puty’s work, including the squeegee cat on the cover who’s slinking away from an angry mob. “Which of These People Hates Country Music the Most?” and “When I Win the Lottery” by Robert Halstead made me chuckle. “Late” by Darren Meriniuk was amusing. Sunburn also comes with a bonus insert called “Sunburn’s Zine Scene” which reviews zines and comic anthologies, and informs us about the Winnipeg zine scene (“Get your local talent here!!!”). I always have been impressed with the per capita quantity of good artistic stuff that comes out of this cold, cold city. One unfortunate thing about Sunburn is that cool females are largely absent except in a couple of the strips. Karl, find some more Winnipeg grrls who can contribute to the next issue, please! (EPW)
