The super sounds of today – yesterday! Get it Straight would make a welcome addition to any modern indie rocker’s collection. Revel in the sharp attitudes, sharp chords, and sharply tapered pants of early 80s Vancouver as you rock out to such Can-Punk classics as Teen City, No Tears, and the countrified Rebel Kind. The Modernettes were contemporaries of D.O.A, The Subhumans, and The Young Canadians, but sounded more like an unholy hybrid of The Carpenters and The Stooges. When this compilation was initially released in 1995, it found little currency in a market defined by North America’s collective grunge hangover and the emergence of electronica. Ten years on, however, with pointy-toed guitar bands littering the landscape, it makes sense to give The Modernettes a second listen. (Karyn Bonham)
