Vallum

This is the inaugural issue featuring a diverse plethora of writers. The writing is strong. I won’t call it academic, because that word makes me weep. It is strong in the sense of its purpose – to convey messages of meaning and to soil the earth with nutrients. The layout is fresh, with glossy pages that oft times detract from the muse of good writing. This is a blend of poems that have been chosen to effectuate the flow from beginning to end. Some risks are taken in editorial decisions. A group of well-thought out pieces that don’t complain but only placate. The kind of work that you would expect considering the price and layout. The best pieces in it were by Robert Allan, Blain Marchand, Susan Gillis and James Deahl. The short story by Seymour Mayne about an Aunt’s Polish comforter was touching. It made me think of the many items that we so surreptitiously keep and then will away when we die. This is an excellent first assemblage of work. They are looking for new material for upcoming issues. (T. Anders Carson)
