Vicissitudes

This chapbook by Saskatoon sound artist and writer Lia Pas is beautiful in both content and design. The chapbook is hand-bound and has a handmade Nepalese paper cover. Pas’s poems tackle the subject of birthing in a surreal and unique way. Pas captures the strangeness of pregnancy and birth, and gives the reader a new take on the experience. Her knowledge of yoga and the human body are apparent in these poems. She is able to create strong and powerful images, which capture both physical and emotional experiences. The titles of the poems are at the bottom of the page, which allows the reader the option to view these as one long poem, or a series within the collection. Pas’ poems have a strong rhythmic, repetitive quality that would be ideal for live performance. (Alexis Keinlen)
