Jack Saturn’s a bit of a loner who’d “rather sit at home eating peanut butter and screening his roommates calls” then go out on the town. He ain’t go no car, but he does have two good feet that carry him around, when he decides to leave the house. And he sure likes to walk. A lot. This issue of his novella-length zine is all about how socially awkward he feels when he has to do the “hell walk” home early in the morning, wearing the exact same clothes he wore the night before. But he walks resolutely, never considering the alternative – taking the bus. Of course, Jack’s likelihood of finding himself in the same-clothes-as-last-night predicament is worsened by the fact that, like his good friend Christian, he’s one of those guys who only owns two pairs of pants (he uses his closet to hold CDs). Jack’s a good writer, and his narrative voice is warm, amiable and down to earth. Whether you’re anti-car or not, it’s worth buying this zine to get a brief peek into Jack’s life, dates with his sweet girlfriend, and encounters with his pals. I must make the obvious comparison – we ain’t got no car is like a low-key, typeset Comet Bus, set in Portland, Oregon. (Emily Pohl-Weary)
