You might suppose that Beyond the Stats (BTS) wants to explode narratives and assumptions. As the name implies, the collective of formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students at the University of California at Davis works to defy statistical trends vis-à-vis scholastic achievement after prison. Their most recent tactic? Zines, of course.
“We started the zine as a way for us to tell our own stories, beyond research or statistics,” said BTS co-founder Tina Curiel-Allen. “We try to have the zine also be a critique of the systems that created the social problems we are products of.”
