MONTREAL

Tuesday, May 22nd, 6:30pm and Saturday, May 26, 5:00pm Montreal roller derby: Les Filles du Roi vs Les Contrabanditas (Le Taz, 8931 avenue Papineau) and New Skids on the Block & Les Sexpos (Arena St-Louis, 5633 St-Dominique)

The roller derby home season is finally here. Les Filles du Roi will go up against the reigning champions les Contrabanditas in this semi-private game on Tuesday, and Saturday will see double the action when The New Skids on the Block play the Suburban Brawl (6pm) and Les Sexpos go up against the Suffer-Jets (8pm).

Wednesday, May 23rd, 7pm, Fallow La Friche, Drawn & Quarterly Bookstore, 211 Bernard W.

Drawn & Quarterly Bookstore will be screening Jamie Ross’s new experimental documentary “Fallow La Friche”, which explores the return of forests to Eastern Ontario. He will also read from the monograph of the same name.

Saturday, May 26, 1pm-4pm, The Lactation Station Breast Milk Bar, Usine C, 1345 Av. Lalonde, Free

Audiences are invited to “quench their curiosity” by tasting samples of pasteurized human breast milk at The Lactation Station Breast Milk Bar, an interactive performance art piece conceived and presented by Jess Dobkin. Participants have the opportunity to sample small quantities of breast milk, donated by local lactating new mothers at this public tasting.

Saturday, May 26, 10pm, Queer Soul Dance Party: Guitar For Girls Brazil, Jackie & Judy/Rococo Bar Spectacle, 6512, avenue du Parc, $5-$10 (sliding scale)

Come dance in support of Guitar for Girls, a Brazilian project that empowers girls through guitar lessons. This is a fundraiser to help the organization buy guitars and keep the project running on a regular basis.

Market Collective is a market created to strengthen the art community in Calgary by showcasing the works of local artists, artisans and musicians.

TORONTO

Thursday May 17th – Sunday May 27th,  Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film Festival, TIFF Bell Lightbox, 350 King Street West, $10-$19

One of the largest LGBT film festivals in the world, Inside Out takes place over 11 days for screenings, artist talks, panel discussions, installations and parties that highlight more than 200 films and videos from Canada and internationally.

This week artbar’s weekly reading series will feature Edward Baranosky, Liz Howard, and Cathy Petch.

Saturday May 26, 7pm, Toronto Poetry Slam Anything Goes Slam, The Drake Hotel, 1150 Queen St W., All Ages, $5

The Anything Goes Slam allows competitors to have some fun on stage and break the rules: wear a costume, do a cover, add some beats to your poem, play an instrument, bring a prop onstage, eat muffins while performing haikus, do something wacky, unexpected, original! The only rule is the time-limit: 3 minutes 10 seconds max.
