As I explained in my editorial in the current issue of Broken Pencil, after a year in the Assistant Editor seat, Laura Trethewey has left the BP nest in pursuit of new adventures in Banff where she is now running the Banff Centre’s online mag BoulderPavement. The response to our job posting was spirited and introduced us to many talented people who are enthusiastic about zines and independent publishing (many of whom will be introduced to you in upcoming issues). But the first introduction goes to Alison Lang, our new Assistant Editor.
Alison recently moved to Toronto from Halifax where she studied journalism and, for the past four years, worked as the Listings Editor and Scene and Heard columnist at The Coast. In addition to her work in Halifax, Alison has worked as a writer and editor in Montreal, Kingston and Ghana, West Africa and has written for Exclaim!, Quill & Quire, Weird Canada, and Tom Tom: A Magazine for Female Drummers. A former Polaris Prize jurist, Alison has a deep interest in music, but she also really likes Flannery O’Connor, the X-Files, Dave Lapp’s comics and cheeseburgers, in that order. She has made zines and the first one she made was about psoriasis.
Alison will be taking over the book section and editing most of our online content, so drop her a line at [email protected] if you would like to review books, pitch online articles or just plain welcome her to Broken Pencil.
