Indie Events: September 9 – 15

 

OTTAWA

Wednesday September 11, 8pm, The Ottawa Zine-Off, Pressed, 750 Gladstone

This is so friggin’ cool – participants had a little less than one month (a “self-enforced communal deadline” to make a zine, and then they bring it to this event on Wed and do major tradesies and chatsies and meetsies and a bit of drinksies, poopsies. This is really great. What a good way to meet your fellow zinesters in Ottawa! Go forth and trade.

 

TORONTO

This month’s edition of the open-source lecture series is curated by Lauren Bride. Featuring Bridget Moser on the subject of DaVinci’s Inquest, Mark Connery on State Legibility and Chris Berube on a subject yet to be determined.

Tuesday September 10, 7:30pm, Choir Choir Choir!, No One Writes to the Colonel, 460 College, $5

This week CCC! performs two songs from the Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums: Nico’s “These Days” and Elliot Smith’s “Needle in the Hay.”

Thursday September 12, 8pm, Dragnet Anthology Launch, The Garrison, 1197 Dundas Street West

Holy crapola – the estimable lit mag Dragnet is launching its own anthology – a collection of its first two years and eight issues. Help ’em celebrate with some excellent reader/personalities and DJs and booooooooze. Featuring Ben Ladouceur, Jeremy Woodcock, Shari Kasman, Catherine Graham and DJs Messy Elliot and David Blowie.

Friday September 13, 7:30pm, Double Book Launch: In Love with Art/The Cage, Revival, 783 College Street

Come for the launch of two amazing new books from Coach House: In Love with Art: Françoise Mouly’s Adventures in Comics with Art Spiegelman by Jeet Heer and The Cage by the late Martin Vaughn-James. These releases are notable (for more info, click the Facebook event) and the evening will feature Heer in conversation with comics writer Sean Rogers.

Sunday September 15, 8pm, Toronto Poetry Slam feat. Lisa B, The Drake Hotel, 1150 Queen Street, $5

This Sunday’s slam features Lisa B. from the Guelph Slam Team.
