This is a rough but interesting effort that focuses on values and the circumstances surrounding those values. It comes in a series of essays, most of them quite literal, a few like “Until the Grass Cracks the Concrete” more emotive. Either way, there is a plaintive note in these writings, a yearning desperation to make people aware of the fundamental contradictions that rule Ivan’s existence (and our own). “Fuck the Feds” is the account of an incident that occurs during a time in which Ivan had taken to sleeping under a bridge. Two Quotes covers a lot of ground, but, like the Feds, focuses on the sublimely hypocritical. For Ivan, it all seems to come down to what we want, versus what we need. He doesn’t know the answer. Neither do I. (HN)
