Highgrader Magazine
Chuck Angus, best known for leading the band Grievous Angels (whose forthcoming new album I’m eagerly awaiting), has long written and sung about Northern Ontario; its inhabitants and its industries (their last album, Waiting for the Cage, was all about miners). His magazine, Highgrader, takes the same approach to people, places and events usually ignored by the rest of the province. This issue has solid articles on toxic dumps, privatization of public trails, the revitalization of Sudbury and attempts by natural gas companies to control university journalism. There’s also articles on mining, ranging from the poison in Yellowknife to the history of miners killed on the job; northern animals; and Bill Barilko (the subject of songs by both the Grievous Angels and the Tragically Hip).
