Our Times: Canada’s Independent Labour Magazine
I was interested in subscribing to Our Times yet reluctant to do so since I was unsure of it’s editorial slant and whether it would be worth reading umpteen articles that just seemed like union marching orders. I was more than pleasantly surprised by what I found in this issue entitled, “Invisible Work & Women.” What strikes the reader almost immediately is the intimate and personal tone, in articles that cover an Asian woman’s struggles to establish the first Chocolate workers’ union in Vancouver, to an under-employed student who describes her stint as a low_paid worker in a downtown Toronto garment factory where the workers are predominately Portuguese, Vietnamese and South Asian women. Also included in this issue is a insightful article on the struggles of the Chiapan people of Mexico, and a report on the fight for better wages and working conditions for women who perform home support care in Nova Scotia. Our Times is an indispensable magazine for those who want to be kept in touch with a broad range of worker’s issues in Canada. (RT)
