Subtitling itself as “Eastern Canada’s Music News Source,” Velocity is an exciting new newspaper along the lines of Toronto’s Exclaim that should be required reading for all music fans in the Maritimes. The level of writing is consistently good, and in addition to articles on B’ehl, The Peter Parkers and Bucket Truck, what really grabbed me were the numerous columns and reviews. The background features on campus radio written by Neil Duxbury and Jacquelyn Corbetton are particularly strong and demonstrate good intuition and focus. Campus radio is the backbone of the independent music community, and the guides here are unerringly perceptive and inclusive, providing reality checks on how stations are operated in an official capacity and the informal social milieu within them. Impressive. (DF)
