You know you’re dealing with a serious social issues site when you hit a dot-org domain name. Flipside is a web-based “alternative weekly” devoted to coverage of “human and civil rights, global peace and environmental sustainability, democracy and equality.” The preamble goes on to say that “By printing the news and ideas the mainstream media won’t, Flipside Weekly exposes the distortions and omissions of the power brokers and helps us to better understand the world around us.” In case you hadn’t picked up on it, we’re talking slightly-left-of-Noam-Chomsky commentary here. The two top stories in the International News section at the time of this review were “CATTLE INDUSTRY PRESSURES AND CORRUPT GOVERNMENTS MEAN MAD COW DISEASE COULD STRIKE CANADA AND U.S.” and “STACKED COMMISSION IGNORES ROLE OF CORPORATE POWER IN U.S.” These people make no bones about their biases. Their stories aren’t so much factual reports as socio-political rants. If you don’t like it, you can always wait for Conrad Black’s new paper. (DW)
