Nightwaves

Nightwaves

Nightwaves is a niche zine “for fans and followers of electronic music,” and strikes a nice balance between the tech side of the genre (equipment, software etc.) and the music itself_covering all forms of electronic music, from synthpop to experimental, techno to industrial. So we get a profile of the classic Korg Mono/Poly synthesizer on one page, and an admittedly_sketchy tribute to the great Killing Joke on another. There’re profiles and reviews galore, and much of it’s actually useful for fans and neophytes. Best piece here is editor Gary Flanagan’s deftly scribed first_hand account of a live performance that he was a part, self_deprecatingly titled “Confessions of a Second Rate Keyboardist _ Part Two.” John’s playing partner had his Czechoslovakian super_synth burning mid_show, filling the room with smoke and setting off sprinklers and fire alarms. The story ends with a panicked Gary and friend fleeing the facility on a bus, as police and fire crews arrive at the performance hall. (DF)
