Coach House Press is dead. But Coach House the printer which got out of the book publishing business when it spl with the recently defunct Coach House Press, has re emerged. Bearded Annex man-about-town Coach Hous Printing owner Stan Bevington has registered the nam Coach House Books, hired a managing editor (BP’s own Hilary Clark) and initiated what may be the most ambitious, and exciting phase yet in the tumultuous history of the dilapidated building nestled behind Robarts library on bpNichol lane. “We are different from any other publisher in Canada/’ says newly appointed managing editor Clark. “We are doing strictly limited editions of fifty to three hundred books. We are doing almost no retail sales and we are publishing all our books in their entirety on-line on our website/’ All of this is to say that the new Coach House Books bears more resemblance to the Coach House Press of the nineteen-sixties and early seventies than it does to the now defunct Coach House Press of the eighties and nineties. “We’ve got a two year window where it’s all pilot/’ says Victor Coleman, one of the editors for the new Coach House Books and one of those involved with the sixties incarnation of Coach House Press. “We are going to try this out, we don’t feel like we have to prove anything to anybody. Of course it is hard to know what is going to happen revenue wise.
